“Lily Evans. I, James Potter, lust you.”
He had been so nervous that his “love” turned to “lust.” He realized his mistake right after he said it, but judging from Lily’s disgusted expression, it was too late to right his wrong. She planted a firm slap across his cheek and walked off, her strides full of the powerful individuality she possessed.
For weeks after that, James had received some particularly demeaning looks from Lily’s female friends and more harshly physical conflicts with Snape. The stupid git had even punched him! Snivellus, of all people! James was irritated, but he was also pretty embarrassed that everyone Lily told about their confrontation now thought that he lusted for her instead of loved her. Great! Just great.
That was in their fourth year. It wasn’t until their seventh year that he finally got to semi-redeem himself.
They were Head Boy and Head Girl, thus required to be around each other more than they were used to. While sitting in McGonagall’s office one day—they were receiving special instructions from their Head of House—Lily stood up, sighed, and turned her back to still-sitting-down James.
“So, Potter.” she began, crossing her arms. James perked up and grinned.
“You can call me James, you know.”
“Shut up.”
James obeyed and bit his lip.
Lily turned to face him, a faint flush of red on her cheeks. “Do you still “lust” for me or have you changed your mind about that? I know you couldn’t have grown up that much in only three years.”
James stared at her, cracked a smile, and began laughing. Lily looked offended. “You were the one who said it, Potter!” she exclaimed, embarrassed that she might have made a fool of herself in front of the idiot before her.
“No no! I just,” he paused to laugh again, “I just can’t believe you remember that!” He snickered a little more, trying to halt his laughing.
Lily huffed. “I think any girl would remember that.”
“True~ but I never got to explain what I meant!”
“Oh? I doubt you would have had a plausible argument anyway.”
“No no! Listen! I was trying to tell you that I loved you, but I was so nervous that it came out “lust”! I solemnly swear!”
Lily didn’t appear as if she believed him, but took the answer anyway, believing that that was the best she was going to get out of him. “Fine. Whatever.”
“It’s true!”
“Right…”
James scratched his head and sighed. “Well…anyway, I still do love you, Evans.”
Lily bit her lower lip. “Not lust?”
“Not lust.”
“…Alright.”
Then she sat back down, and didn’t look at him again. Despite this, James had a wide smile on his face for the rest of the day; Lily had been blushing, and he was confident that she possibly, just maybe, loved him, too.
